Sophia Pike, an educator and performer, is a teacher at Lott Music Studio and throughout the Ames and Ankeny area. She discovered her love of music from an early age, having been cited as “dancing” in time with music since she could stand and “singing” nearly before she could talk. Growing up in a vibrant musical and theatrical area, Sophia was regularly involved with various music groups of all genres and multiple community theatre troupes throughout the Quad Cities until she moved to Ames for college. She cites having the opportunities to sing and perform genres such as, blues, celtic, choral, folk, rock, art song, and musical theatre music as one of the main reasons she is the versatile musician she is today.
In college, Sophia studied Vocal Music Education at Iowa State University while rounding out her education with several voice performance centered classes, singing in Iowa State Singers and ISU Opera Studio along with playing in various instrumental ensembles, including the jazz bands, CySlides trombone choir, ISUCF’V’MB and State Storm’s drum line, and concert band. While at Iowa State, Sophia studied voice under Janet Alcorn and Chad Sonka and diction under Jodi Goble, and discovered her love of the technicality of singing operatic music and classical art song.
While at Iowa State, Sophia was awarded the Friends of Music Scholarship Award, Barbara Jean Brown Choral Music Scholarship Award twice, and the McCowen Award, recognized for her prowess as a performer, student, leader, and her dedication to the department.
When Sophia is not at the studio, she can be found performing around the Ames and Ankeny area in various musical communities including the Des Moines Choral Society and with the Ames Municipal Band. She loves bringing people together with the honesty and storytelling music provides. Sophia is an avid reader, and loves discovering new authors and stories when she’s not listening to records with her cat, O’Malley, or exploring new outdoor adventures with her partner, Kyle.
One of Sophia’s favorite parts of teaching voice is implementing healthy technique with her students and seeing their voices blossom together as they discover their free sound. She loves working with all levels of musicians and getting to be a part of their musical journey as they further discover their love of music and singing!
