Andrew King graduated from Iowa State University in fall 2025 with a degree in Music Education, with a focus on instrumental music. Starting in the 2026 school year will teach band for grades 5-12 at Panorama Community School. Andrew has a variety of experience in regards to ensemble participation and performance. He has been involved in several musical ensembles at Iowa State University, such as: CySlides Trombone Choir, Percussion Ensemble, State Storm, ISUCF’V’MB, Men’s Basketball Pep Band, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, jazzONE, and the Iowa State Wind Ensemble. During the summers, he plays in the Ames Municipal Band. All of these ensembles have given him great experience with different genres of music, from classical, to jazz, to modern and popular music.
While Andrew’s primary instrument is bass trombone, he took several methods classes at Iowa State University. These classes and his teaching experience has expanded his musical skills to a wide variety of instruments. Andrew teaches students of all experience levels on bass trombone, trombone, tuba, and euphonium. Additionally, he offers beginner to intermediate lessons on flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, and trumpet.
In his teaching, Andrew emphasizes and reinforces fundamental music skills and knowledge since they are foundational to making great musicians. One of the biggest areas of focus is how students use their air to create sound; there are a wide variety of breathing exercises that he likes to use to help students develop their sound. Not only that, but Andrew believes that it is also important to play music that students enjoy playing, especially to avoid burn-out. When students have fun, engaging music to play, they’re much more likely to keep practicing and enjoy their lessons.
